“CHIPERITA” – Acrylic on Canvas, 120 x 50 cm

The term Chiperita in Paraguay carries two cultural references: it can refer to a folkloric Paraguayan dance, or to the character from the Paraguayan film La Chiperita, which portrays a young woman who sells chipa (a traditional Paraguayan bread) on the streets. Both evoke the deep connection to chipa, a beloved symbol of Paraguayan identity.

The Dance – “La Chiperita”

  • Origin: A folkloric dance derived from Paraguayan polka, one of its many variations.

  • Characteristics: Performed by couples, it is a lively and expressive dance marked by coordinated yet independent movements.

  • Costume: Women traditionally wear the typói blouse along with a wide, flowing skirt, highlighting elegance and grace.

The Film – “La Chiperita”

  • Plot: A romantic comedy that tells the story of a woman who sells chipa on the streets while navigating love in its many forms, from family bonds to romantic relationships.

  • Message: The film celebrates love, perseverance, and the essence of Paraguayan womanhood, encouraging the audience to embrace love without fear.

This painting captures the spirit of La Chiperita, intertwining folklore, tradition, and cultural identity in a vibrant artistic expression.
